Behavioural Concerns

Understanding your child’s behaviour, emotions and everyday challenges with thoughtful, child-centred assessment and guidance.

Understanding the Child Behind the Behaviour

Children communicate in many different ways, and behaviour can sometimes be a way of expressing emotions, difficulties or unmet needs. Parents may have questions about changes in behaviour, attention, social interaction, emotions or everyday routines. Our paediatric care provides an opportunity to discuss these concerns as part of understanding your child’s overall development and wellbeing.

A consultation allows parents to share what they have noticed at home, school or in other settings and discuss whether further assessment or support may be appropriate.

Behavioural Concerns FAQs

Clear answers to common questions parents have about their child’s behaviour, attention and emotional development.

Behavioural concerns can involve persistent or noticeable difficulties with areas such as attention, activity levels, emotional regulation, social interaction or everyday routines.

The significance of a behaviour depends on the individual child, their age, developmental stage and circumstances.

You can discuss your child’s behaviour whenever you have a concern. It may be particularly useful when behaviour is persistent, changing, affecting everyday activities or creating difficulties at home or school.

Young children can experience strong emotions and may have difficulty expressing or managing them. However, if a parent is concerned about the frequency, intensity or impact of a child’s behaviour, it is appropriate to discuss it with a healthcare professional.

Children’s attention can vary depending on their age, environment and activity. If difficulties with concentration are persistent or are affecting learning, school, relationships or everyday activities, parents can discuss the concern with a paediatrician.

Children may behave differently in different environments. Information from both parents and teachers can be helpful when trying to understand a behavioural concern.

Behaviour and development can be closely connected. Concerns about communication, social interaction, learning, attention or other developmental areas can be discussed as part of a broader paediatric assessment.
